Club Meeting -- Moraga's Capital Improvement Projects and Safety Improvements

The speaker will be Nate Levine, PE,TE, Senior Engineer, Town of Moraga.  Nate will discuss his duties focused on delivering Capital Improvement Projects and Transportation Safety improvements, which includes planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of various projects such as the Town’s annual pavement rehabilitation project, Town-wide Safety Improvements (HSIP), and the County Smart Signals Project.

Club Meeting -- Forefront developments in astronomy and astrophysics

The speaker will be John Corlett, a physicist retired from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, whose topic is titled Forefront Developments in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
 
The speaker will outline some of the current challenges and advances in astronomy and astrophysics, including the impact of new results from unique capabilities of recently commissioned tools, such as the James Web Space Telescope (JWST), the Dark Energy Spectroscopy Instrument (DESI) and the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Dark Matter experiment.

The speakers will be Julie Haydon and Tracy Grant of Cantare Con Vivo ( https://www.cantareconvivo.org/ ).  Julie is the Director of Children's and Youth Choirs and Tracy is the new Executive Director.  They will give an update on the programs and activities of the organization.

Club Meeting -- Insights Gained from Working the Pacific Palisades and Eaton Fires

The speaker will be Lucas Lambert, Deputy Fire Chief of the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District (MOFD).  He will be sharing insights from the experiences the MOFD team encountered while assisting with the Palisades and Eaton Fires in Southern California.  He will present lessons learned and discuss how we can implement preventative measures in our own communities to improve our community’s survival in the event of a wildland fire.

The speaker will be Lynda Deschambault, recently-installed member of the East Bay Regional Parks District Board of Directors.  Lynda represents Ward 2, which includes Moraga.
 
The title of her presentation is "Protecting Our Parks".  Lynda will provide an overview of the key climate crisis challenges facing the sustainability of our communities, an orientation to the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD), the work of the Parks District, and actions we can take and ways to be involved to best help protect our Parks for future generations to enjoy.

The speaker will be Kristin Connolly, Contra Costa County's Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters, who overseas both the Clerk-Recorder Division and Election Division.

The speaker will be District 2 County Supervisor Candace Andersen, who represents the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Canyon, Danville, Diablo, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Rossmoor, San Ramon, Tassajara Valley, and parts of unincorporated Walnut Creek.  She will provide an update on what is going on in the District and in the County.

Club Meeting -- The Maktaba Project

The speaker will be Gerald Mbugua, who represents and will discuss Maktabas Inc, a non-profit with offices in San Lorenzo. 
 
The Maktaba project focuses on establishing libraries for children and adults in local communities and slums in Kenya that have no text books.  Many of the books are collected from unsold books at the semi-annual Friends of the Moraga Library book sale event.
 
Gerald will provide an update on Maktabas and his work in Kenya to distribute those books.
 
The Program Provider will be Karl Davis.

Club Meeting -- Entrepreneurship at Saint Mary's College

The title of the program will be "Entrepreneurship at Saint Mary's College."
 
Our guest presenter will be Professor Jeem Sirivar, Coordinator of the Entrepreneurship program in the School of Economics and Business Administration, and Alejandra Perez, President of the Entrepreneurship Club, who will talk about her family's entrepreneurial business, Alex's Bee Farm. 
 
The Program Provider will be Donald E. Gibson, PhD, Dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration (SEBA) at Saint Mary’s College.

Club Meeting -- "Fact Over Fiction – Navigating the News."

Representatives of the Diablo Valley Chapter of the League of Women Voters are scheduled to give a presentation entitled “Fact Over Fiction – Navigating the News.” 
 
The presentation includes suggestions on several subtopics, including (i) how to spot questionable information, (ii) how to assess what is valid journalism vs. propaganda, (iii) how to verify text and images, (iv) how to help slow the mis/disinformation cycle and (v) how to find and access trusted sources of news and information.
 
The Program Provider is Ferenc Kovac.

The speaker will be Rob Seitelman, Board President of the Town Hall Theater Company in Lafayette (Town Hall Theater Company), who will discuss the history of the theater, programming, and it’s relationship to Moraga.  Rob has worked as an actor, playwright, director, and educator in schools and theaters across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, and lives in Moraga.

The speaker will be John Fazel, a resident of Orinda and member of Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary, who will give a talk titled "Trails, the Pathway to Health and Happiness.” He will be discussing the Lamorinda Loop Trail as the center piece connecting us to the larger, longer trails at our doorstep. The speaker will be Pablo Martinez, Program Director for the non-profit Support for Recovery (aka "Support4Recovery"), who will give a talk entitled "Educating and Empowering People," with a focus on their mission of supporting individuals who are recovering from addiction and their families by providing vital resources.  The program provider will be Luis Guillen.

The speaker will be Howard Harpham, former Club member and long-time attorney with the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office, with a presentation he entitled “Tall Tales But True,” featuring personal recollections of his 32 years of ‘life with crime,’ which included assignments to defend persons charged with homicide.  The Program host will be Stan Holcenberg.

The speakers will be Chris McGuffin, Treasurer and Board member of the Moraga Historical Society (MHS), and Susan Sperry, MHS Board President, with a presentation in observance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of MHS, the presentation to include (a) an update on MHS progress and activities during the past year and (b) mention of events scheduled for the upcoming year.

The speaker will be Chuck Myers, Docent and member of the Board of Directors of the USS Hornet Museum.  He spoke about his background as a Navy veteran and his experiences around aircraft carriers and films that       depicted them, together with the history of the USS Hornet, its part in major events, and features of the museum.  The Program Host will be John Lee.

The Kiwanis Club of Moraga Valley donates money and volunteers time to support local organizations that help children and families.  The club's major fundraisers each year are the selling of See's Candy during the holiday season and supporting the Town's July 4th and Pear & Wine Festival events.
