Lynda will discuss how EBRPD became the nation’s largest park district, the important role of youth, and the upcoming District plan to ensure resources, biodiversity, and watersheds are protected and client resistant.

The speaker will be Maggie McCloskey, herself a lung cancer survivor, whose presentation is entitled, “Lung  Cancer Screening: Why Early Detection Matter.”  The speaker will share her personal story and her responses to a number of commonly-asked questions, including (a) what screening is – and what it is not, (b) why early detection matters, and (c) who should consider screening (NOT just smokers – anyone with lungs can get lung cancer).  She will also share some key U.S. lung cancer statistics (including deaths resulting from lung cancer, compared to breast, colon and prostate cancer).  The Program Provider will be Mike Donovan

Carolyn Jackson, Lesher Center General Manager, will give a talk titled "Evolution of the Lesher Center."  The talk will include an overview of the history and evolving programming at the Walnut Creek arts center, including highlights of initiatives in the Center’s strategic plan and a preview of upcoming events.
 
Carolyn Jackson is the Assistant Director of the City of Walnut Creek’s Arts + Recreation Department, serving as General Manager of the Lesher Center and Managing Director of Center REP.   She oversees programming including the Headliners presentation series, Center Repertory Company, Bedford Gallery, venue rentals, and educational programs.

The speaker will be Lauren MacDonald, Dean of the Library and Academic Resources and Executive Director of the Museum of Art at Saint Mary’s College of California (SMCMoA), who will give a  presentation entitled “Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, William Keith and the California Landscape Collection,” in which she (a) traces the history and significance of SMCMoA, the only institution in Contra Costa County which is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and (b) examines its distinguished collection of works by Mr. Keith, one of California’s most celebrated landscape painters, including an exploration of the collection’s historical importance, its role in preserving California’s artistic heritage, and SMCMoA’s ongoing commitment to stewarding these works.

The speaker is scheduled to be Moraga Police Detective Craig Walker, who will be discussing current trends in scams and financial crimes targeting Moraga residents.  He has investigated hundreds of different scams, some of which involved the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Prior to his career in law enforcement, he was a stock broker/investment advisor for major brokerages, giving him a unique perspective on financial crimes.

The topic is:  Maximizing Potential for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Adults

Learn how CEID’s unique approach to supporting young children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH) and their families promotes language and communication development during the critical window of brain growth.   CEID is a Bay Area-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that has been working with young D/HH children, adults and their families since 1980.  Cindy will share about the needs, CEID services and what has changed in the nearly 5 decades CEID has been a community resource for positive impact.

Club Brooke Schwartz, a food safety consultant, will speak on “Understanding the Cyclospora Outbreak”.  Drawing on her 20 years of experience in developing and commercializing methods for food pathogen detection, Brooke will provide a talk about the current Cyclospora outbreak and how the public and private sectors work to prevent, identify and respond to foodborne pathogen outbreaks.

The Kiwanis Club of Moraga Valley donates money and volunteers time to support local organizations that help children and families.  The club's major fundraisers each year are the selling of See's Candy during the holiday season and supporting the Town's July 4th and Pear & Wine Festival events.
